Course Overview
This 1–2 Day course aims to develop participants’ skills in conducting structured and effective investigations of environmental incidents and uncovering their underlying root causes. The course places strong emphasis on assessing environmental aspects and impacts, identifying systemic failures, and applying effective corrective and preventive measures in alignment with ISO 14001:2015 standard/best environmental practices and relevant legal requirements.
Through practical tools and real-life case studies, class active engagement, 2-way interactions, practical examples, and proven tools, participants will learn to connect investigation outcomes to environmental performance improvement, sustainability goals, and the continual improvement cycle for Environmental Management.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the purpose and process of environmental incident investigation in regulatory and EMS contexts.
- Classify environmental aspects and impacts involved in incidents and assess short- and long-term consequences.
- Conduct systematic evidence collection and fact-finding during incident investigations.
- Apply structured root cause analysis (RCA) tools such as 5 Whys and Fishbone Diagrams to environmental scenarios.
- Identify immediate, contributing, and systemic root causes across human, process, and environmental domains.
- Develop corrective actions using the Hierarchy of Environmental Controls to prevent recurrence.
- Integrate findings into the EMS, including aspect-impact registers, legal registers, operational controls, emergency response plan, and internal audits.

Certification
Participants who successfully demonstrate competence during this course will receive a Certificate of Attainment covering the following competency units:
- JSA Inc – II-RCA: Incident Investigation – Root Cause Analysis (Environmental)
Participants not deemed competent are issued Certificates of Attendance and given the opportunity to retake the mandatory competencies previously missed.

Participants receive a package that consists of II-RCA (Environmental) student manual and other value-added reference materials.
